Dr. Sammika Cosey's dedication to education and social change began in 2008, when she started her career in the field of education. Initially, she worked with students in Chicago Public Schools who struggled to meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards. This experience sparked a deep passion for making a difference in the lives of others.
With a Bachelor of Science from Northern Illinois University (2008) and a Master of Art in Teaching (2013), Dr. Cosey's academic foundation was solidified. Her pursuit of knowledge continued when she earned her certification as a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and then obtaining a Doctor of Education.
As Dr. Cosey became more involved in her community, she recognized the significant challenges faced by urban communities. A lack of resources, job opportunities, youth programs, and educational programs were just a few of the issues that plagued these areas. The devastating impact of school and mental hospital closures only exacerbated the problems. In response, Dr. Cosey founded The Cosey Project, initially focusing on autism advocacy and awareness.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for growth and expansion. Recognizing the immense need for support, Dr. Cosey decided to broaden the organization's scope to address not only developmental disorders but also mental health disorders. The Cosey Project's mission is now multifaceted, providing essential support services for families and individuals affected by special needs and mental health conditions.
Dr. Cosey's vision is to create a positive impact on the community by breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity, acceptance, and understanding. Through The Cosey Project, she strives to empower individuals and families to overcome the challenges they face and thrive in their personal and professional lives.
